Tromsø Salsa updated: 20.12.2005

A common misunderstanding is that you have to go to Cuba to se authentic salsa dancers. The fact is however that salsa was created in the Latin community of New York at the end of the 1960's - beginning of 70's, when musicians started to jazz up traditional latin music. The salsa, is strongly related to mambo. In New York they dance the 'cross body style', the most popular style world-wide - and now the way almost everybody in Tromsø dance.

As part of the training of Salsa Frio Dance Team, we invited Mambo Jack from New York to come to Tromsø in April 2004. Jack was one of the first dancers of the famous 'Salvaje! Dance Company' in Arizona, USA (the comany have often been invitet to perform at the biggest salsa congres in the world in Los Angeles and will do so this year as well - our own Consuelo was part of the company before she moved to Norway summer03). Jack lived in New York, where he has been vigorously studying modern mambo (New York salsa) and other related aspects of salsa dancing from Mr Eddie Torres, the most respected and reputable salsa instructor in the world. In addition to studying dance, Jack has devoted much of his time to unearthing and uncovering how to teach understanding of salsa music.

He stayed here in Tromsø for 3 weeks! :) He gave us amazing classes, dance shows and parties!
