Text and photo: Erik and Consuelo

2007 - a crazy year - almost 7 months away from home. We had a fantastic time in Los Angeles in May. This event is known to be the most prestigious salsa congress in the world. We stayed for a week. We then went to Portland, Orgeon for 3 weeks, and then we headed for New York for 2 months of hard training. In August we went to the China Salsa Congress. We liked it so much that we stayed. We have a blast!

The world Salsa Congress Los Angeles 2007

The Los Angeles Salsa Congress is one amazing festival that attracts thousands of people from all over the Globe. For the 9th year in a row, salseros from all over the world gathered for a long weekend, starting on Thursday, to celebrate their love of salsa. The event includes Salsa Dance workshops at different levels from beginners to the super advanced levels, vendors selling everything from dance shoes to dance dvd's, seminars about salsa history and music, live concerts, open salsa championships, parties, and performances with selected dance teams. Many nice salsa festivals are arranged different places around the world. but none of them are as this congress, it is the biggest in the world.

This years event was held at the Radisson Hotel, Los Angeles. For us it was one of the best congresses ever. On Thursday arround noon When arriving with the mini-bus from the airport, we were welcomed by 6-7 drummers at the hotel entrance. Inside was a long line of dancers from China, Colombia, Sweden, etc registering. It was very exciting. After greeting friends from many different corners of the world, we headed for our room and went to sleep. Our trip started at 3 o'clock in the morning after only 2 hours of sleep. In the evening we went to the first party which included about 20 performances by international dancers followed by a party to the Orquesta Tabaco Y Ron. We saw some spectacular shows, and got some great dances later.

The next day we got up early and started preparing for our own performance which would be on Friday night. It is quite a feeling to enter the stage in front of all those people. It is both scary and fun at the same time. Our routine went really well, was very well received, and we had a blast celebrating it for the rest of the night as we enjoyed other performances and a concert with Chino Espinoza.

On Saturday we got up early to join some of the amazing dance workshops with masters such as Tito and Tamara, Oliver and Luda, Hacha y Machete, Liz Lira, Billy Farjado and Katie Marlow, etc. We learned a lot of cool new stuff such as shines, partnermoves, lifts and trick. Our favourite of all performances the entire weekend: Oliver and Luda. They just made our jaws drop. (TEXT IN PROGRESS....)

Biggest salsa event in the world

The Los Angeles salsa congress is arranged every year in May. This 5-day event gathers people from all over the world. Thousands of dancers, beginners and profesionals join to dance on the biggest dance floors to the most famous orchestras, learn from the best instructors, and see the best dance shows. It is an experience for a lifetime to join!

Albert Torres

Salsa would not be so popular if it was not for this man. Santana, Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin and others internationalized Latin Music in the 90's, but thanks to Albert who arranges these congresses/festivals, information about dance skills and styles, and music is exchanged between people from all over the world. He globalized salsa dancing. A guy from northern Norway can learn moves from an amazing dancer from New York, Cuba or Puerto Rico.

Albert Torres makes sure that everybody behind stage is ready for the show. He informs the dancers about which order they are performing.

About 100 dance teams from the whole world perform during the congress.

At these congresses you can also buy dance effects such as costumes, cool t-shirts, cd's, instructional videos, shoes, instruments, etc
Each night is a huge party with a huge dancefloor, and several fantastic bands. There are several bars located around the area. After one or two dances with a person you reach out your hands to dance with the next - maybe someone from the other side of the planet?
